Each of the large paintings is a page of a “book” that will tell a story called Garbage.
Narrative has been a driving force in my work for a long time but this is the first time that I am working with a recognizable narrative form - the comic book. My use of the comic form means taking certain visual metaphors like thought and speech bubbles for granted, but as I use these metaphors I am also trying to question how we normally encounter and interpret them.
Another aspect of the work that will become clearer as the story progresses is the use of different narrative modes. These modes - recognizable as varying sets of formal decisions from one painting to the next - propel the story forward using different points of view. They can shift with the portrayal of one character to the next or with the representation of something that might have happened as opposed to something that has happened.
